Huntingdale Golf Club, located in the heart of Melbourne’s world-famous Sandbelt region, is one of Australia’s premier championship golf courses. Consistently rated as one of the best conditioned courses in the country, Huntingdale is also the Sandbelt’s youngest.

Rising to fame in 1979 with the inaugural hosting of the Australian Masters, Huntingdale has emerged as one of the most recognisable golf courses in Australia. Since 1979, Huntingdale has played host to some of the most famous names in golf, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and world number one, Tiger Woods.

In 2008 Huntingdale celebrated its 30th consecutive year of hosting the Australian Masters and is justifiably recognised as the ‘Home of the Australian Masters’.

Huntingdale’s golf affiliations go back to 1896, when Surrey Hills Golf Club was established. The Club prospered until 1914, when it disbanded on the outbreak of the First World War. By 1941, after moving from the Surrey Hills site, to Canterbury Road in Box Hill then Doncaster Road, Doncaster, club members elected to move into the Sandbelt region, and onto land previously used for coursing by the Melbourne Hunt Club. When the course re-opened in 1941, it took the name Huntingdale Golf Club.

Commonwealth’s origins can be traced to a redoubtable group of 11 golfing enthusiasts who in May 1915 formed the Murrumbeena Golf Club and later aspired to a home on the Melbourne Sandbelt.

Designed by club professional Sam Bennett, the first 12 holes opened early in 1921 and the full 18 were in play by 1924. In 1926, Charles Lane, the Club Captain, travelled abroad to study golf architecture and met British designer Harry Colt, a former partner of Alister MacKenzie.
Photography by David Scaletti
Lane brought what he learned home and put the finishing touches on Commonwealth’s greens and bunkers. He did much of the work himself, often being seen stripped to the waist and digging out bunkers.

Among the big events played on the course are the 1967 Australian Open, which local player Peter Thomson won by seven shots, and the 2010 and 2011 Women’s Australian Open, both won by Yani Tseng of Taiwan.

The Club has also been included in Tom Doak’s list of 31 courses ‘among the first I would take a good friend to see’. He said that…

‘The genius of Commonwealth is its adherence to one simple rule – that each green should be oriented or tilted in such a way that it cradles an approach from one side of the fairway and shoulders away shots from the incorrect line of approach’

Situated on the rugged cliffs at La Perouse, New South Wales Golf Club overlooks Botany Bay where Captain James Cook first sailed into Australia on the SS Endeavour in 1770. For golfers, however, it was the visit of another intrepid British pioneer, which gives the site its historical significance.

During his whirlwind 1926 Australian tour, legendary designer Dr Alister MacKenzie visited La Perouse and was enthused about the potential for building a great golf course. Clearly moved by the surroundings he declared that New South Wales (NSW) would ‘present more spectacular views than any other golf course in the world, with the possible exception of Cypress Point’. Today golfers continue to make the pilgrimage to this sacred site to tackle a course built by nature, framed by the Pacific Ocean and shaped by the greatest hand of all.

NSW is a wonderful combination of undulating fairways, beautiful scenic vistas and a spectacular clubhouse which is a magnificent combination of traditional architecture and five star comfort. Shortly after its 1928 opening, an edition of ‘Golf in Australia’ magazine described NSW as needing ‘only the improving hand of time to become the acme of perfection’. The hand of time has indeed improved this masterpiece and though it is unlikely any course is the absolute ‘acme of perfection’, NSW Golf Club gets about as close as any in Australia.

The course and club are steeped in history. It is a well known historical fact that Captain Cook and his crew found their first drinking water in a natural spring below where the 18th tee is located today.

In short, this is more than just a golf course – it is an unforgettable experience of nature. To play golf at NSW Golf Club is to play golf how the game was intended to be played – at the complete mercy of Mother Nature and the golfer’s ability.

One of the jewels in the Melbourne Sandbelt, Kingston Heath enjoys an enviable reputation for its superb conditioning all year round.

Shortly after World War One, prominent Melbourne solicitor Stanley Dutton Green led a committee of members from the Elsternwick Golf Club in a search to acquire sufficient land within the Melbourne Sandbelt to construct their own championship golf course. The search for the ideal site brought them south to Cheltenham, to a small gently undulating parcel of land with perfect sandy soil and a number of excellent natural features.

Designed by Dan Soutar with bunkering from Dr Alister MacKenzie, and constructed by Royal Melbourne greenkeeper Mick Morcom, the course was ready for play in 1925. It was officially the longest course ever seen in Australia. Measuring a little over 6200 metres, its par of 82 included 12 par 5s and just two par 3s.

Nowadays as a par 72 course, many golfers are grateful they were not around to tackle the Heath in its infancy armed with a hickory shafted Brassie and Niblick.

Since the 1948 Australian Open, Kingston Heath has regularly hosted national and international tournaments, including seven Australian Opens and one Women’s Open. Having first played at Elsternwick in 1909, the Club marked its centenary in 2009 with a new clubhouse and by staging the Australian Masters, won by Tiger Woods.

From its earliest days in 1898, The Yarra Yarra Golf Club has been a part of Melbourne’s history. Those who walk the fairways and corridors of Yarra Yarra enjoy an experience with the spirits of those great amateurs, professionals and members who have gone before.

Originally known as Eaglemont Golf Club, members of Yarra Yarra played over a rough nine hole course on land that is now part of the city of Heidelberg. This was the very land painted by Arthur Streeton in the seminal work of Australian art, ‘Golden Summers’ (1889). The Club was ahead of its time as women were equal members with men at its inception.

As the metropolis expanded, members found a new home in 1911 at nearby Rosanna on the banks of the Yarra River. Yarra, an indigenous word for ‘flowing’, was selected when renaming the Club to reflect their new surroundings. In 1927, the necessity to find better golfing land led to the purchase of the present site in Bentleigh East, and the club relocated once more.

Hundreds of people attended the official opening of the course and Mediterranean-style clubhouse in February 1929. Then and now, Yarra Yarra Golf Club presents a warm and friendly ambience in a setting unrivaled among Melbourne’s golf courses.

Many of the world’s greatest golfers have competed in tournaments here. This includes Walter Hagen, ‘Babe’ Didrickson, Joe Kirkwood and Peter Thomson, along with Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Ian Baker-Finch, Karrie Webb, Anika Sorensten, Jan Stephenson and Rachel Teske. What’s more, Robert Allenby and Stuart Appleby both launched their professional careers from their membership as amateurs at Yarra Yarra.

In February 2007, the multimillion dollar re-furbished clubhouse was opened. The first-class facilities ensure Yarra Yarra retains its standing as one of Melbourne’s leading prestigious private golf clubs.

Largely unheralded outside of Melbourne, the Woodlands Golf Club is yet another exceptional example of classic Australian golf course architecture. It is also one of the few private golf clubs that remains on its original site.

Co-founder Mr G H Rogers, a school teacher with a passion for golf, suggested the site for the course in 1912. A year later, the Club was established on leased, open woodlands that were, at the time, used for grazing. The land was part of the estate of Count Fonceca, a French nobleman, known as the ‘Mad Count’ for his eccentric behaviour.

By 1919, the basic design of the course was completed and little has changed since then. The course is in a natural bush setting and was declared a sanctuary for native game in 1925.

The present clubhouse was rebuilt after fire destroyed the old clubhouse in 1927. In 2010, it was renovated at a cost of over $8 million and is an outstanding example of Australian architecture. The clubhouse provides panoramic views of the golf course and hosts many member, golf and business events.

Situated in the beachside suburb of Cheltenham, Victoria offers a golfing experience on par with the world’s best. The beautifully landscaped course is designed to challenge both the amateur and professional golfer. It is one of the region’s tougher courses, with lightning-fast greens and some of the best bunkering in Australia.

The Victoria Golf Club was founded in 1903 by Mr Bill Meader and was initially located at Fishermans Bend in Port Melbourne. The Club moved to its current location in 1927 and the new course was designed by Oscar Damman and Bill Meader with the assistance from the doyen of course architects, Dr Alister MacKenzie.

The Club has an incredible history in world golf and in 1954, perhaps one of the most remarkable feats in world golf occurred. VGC Club Members, Doug Bachli and Peter Thomson set the Club on the world stage when Bachli won the British Amateur Championship and Thomson won the first of his five British Open Championships. Both trophies sat side-by-side on the mantelpiece in the Members Bar. In recognition of this feat, and the contribution of these two great members to the game of golf, the Club named a room in their honour – the Bachli Thomson Room. Club member Geoff Ogilvy has also had recent international success, winning the 2006 US Open.

The clubhouse is regarded as one of the best in Australia and includes 15 twin-share accommodation rooms. The contribution of these houseguests to the ‘fabric’ of the Club is significant. The hospitality experiences offered by the Club are exceptional and the awe of first-time guests ensures that they become regular visitors to the Club.

As Peter Thomson said, ‘Some clubs have a special character that sets them apart. It is not necessarily the quality of the course, or the accommodations of the buildings that distinguishes them. It is more essentially the membership, past, and present, and the file of achievements over such a period of decades that creates such a tradition. Victoria Golf Club is such a club’.

The Royal Melbourne Golf Club's original course was laid out near the Caulfield Racecourse in 1891 and members played there for ten years until the historic move that marked the birth of what is now the world famous Melbourne Sandbelt.

Renowned Scottish architect Dr Alister MacKenzie was commissioned to design a course for the new site of The Royal Melbourne Golf Club. When he arrived by ship in October 1926 he was delighted with the rolling, sandy terrain that grew wonderful turf and was easy to work with horse-drawn equipment.

Before starting work on the West Course design, MacKenzie asked for a listing of all members’ ages and handicaps, determined to make his course enjoyable for golfers of any ability. MacKenzie produced a masterpiece in the West Course during the short weeks he spent in Melbourne.

He then made club member and 1924 Australian Open champion Alex Russell his business partner. Subsequently, it was Russell who designed the East Course that opened in 1931.

From the 1930s, The Royal Melbourne Golf Club has been the preferred venue for the big tournaments including the Australian Open, the World Cup, Bicentennial Classic and The Presidents Cup. Since 1959 these events have been played on the Composite Course made up of six holes from Russell’s East Course and 12 from MacKenzie’s West.
